8 Ways to Celebrate Halloween with Pets
Halloween doesn’t have to be just for the kids in costumes. After all, our pets are part of the family, and they want to be included in the fun. Whether you’re into staying home with cozy traditions or getting out and about, celebrate Halloween with pets, too. Here are 8 sweet (and safe) ways to celebrate the season with them.
1. Carve a Pumpkin to Look Like Your Pet

Skip the ordinary jack-o’-lantern and create one inspired by your cat, dog, or even your hamster! Whether it’s carving their face, etching their name, or just adding some paw prints, a pet-themed pumpkin makes the night feel extra personal.
2. Snuggle Up for a Spooky Movie

Halloween night doesn’t have to mean chaos at the door. Instead, turn the lights low, make some popcorn (and a safe treat for your pet), and curl up together for a spooky movie. Pets love the warmth of your presence, and you’ll love hiding your eyes in their fur during the scary parts.
But make sure the movie’s not too scary. Once, I was watching my 2 boys play a scary video game with my cat and dog by my side. At one point, we all screamed in fright, and the cat and dog raced each other up the stairs. They didn’t know it was pretend! They were terrified for 3 days. Poor babies.
3. Dress Them Up (If They Enjoy It!)

Some pets love costumes—others, not so much.
If your furry friend doesn’t mind, find a simple, comfortable outfit for a quick photo session.
A festive bandana or bow tie can be just as fun as a full costume.
Bonus points if your costume matches them!
4. Go on a “Howl-o-ween” Walk

If your dog enjoys a good stroll, take them out on Halloween evening to see the decorations in the neighborhood. They’ll love the new sights and smells, and you’ll both get a chance to enjoy the spirit of the night without the sugar rush.
5. Host a Pet-Friendly Treat Party

Why not make a batch of homemade pumpkin dog biscuits or catnip toys? You can even invite a friend with their pet for a mini “paw-ty.” Just make sure all the treats are pet-safe.
6. Create a Pet Halloween Photo Shoot

Pull together some autumn props—pumpkins, cozy blankets, maybe some fairy lights—and capture your pet’s personality in seasonal photos. It’ll give you memories to look back on year after year.
7. Read a Spooky Story Together

Pets may not understand the plot, but they love the sound of your voice. Curl up under a blanket and read aloud from a favorite ghost story or mystery novel. It’s a comforting way to wind down the evening.
8. Build a Cozy Den

With trick-or-treaters knocking and strange noises outside, Halloween can be a stressful time for pets. Create a cozy den with their bed, toys, and a blanket so they feel safe and loved through it all.
If your dog barks at people or is afraid of all the kids in costume coming to the door, try a Thundershirt. My dog was a Nervous Nellie, and being swaddled in a Thundershirt calmed him down.
Halloween becomes extra magical when you slow down and celebrate with the ones who love you unconditionally—even the four-legged ones. Whether you’re crafting, cooking, or cuddling, these little traditions turn October nights into memories that feel as warm as a pumpkin spice latte and as cozy as your pet at your side.
